The Dragon is a temple to traditional China, with almost every Chinese influence short of a Terracotta Warrior crammed inside and out. Located on the cool shores of Ho Tay (West Lake), it is in a popular expat area about a 10-minute taxi or moto ride into Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter.
At first sight the Dragon's facade looks as gaudy as can be, with its Chinese-style tiled roof and neon embellishments. Inside, however, it all comes together remarkably well. Along with the helpful staff, a huge, gold carved dragon motif greets you in the lobby, and carved dragons and lions adorn walls and doorways throughout. The rooms surround an atrium that finishes in a pool populated by fish and a giant statue of Brahman (yes, seems odd, but apparently not). All come with faux-wood floors, Internet (request in advance); and, in several, a small balcony. Both the standard and 'VIP' rooms are very good value, with lashings of Chinese character in the latter - red silk pillows and red and black lacquered furniture, but no view. The Chinese theme is continued throughout the ground-floor bar and restaurant
